Thinking of taking your nanny on vacation with you? We think that can be a great idea, but please remember the following tips!

1. First and foremost, please understand that this is not a vacation for your nanny. They will be working the whole time, so consider it to be more like a business trip. And as the employer, you’ll need to cover all expenses–airfare, meals, accommodations, etc.

2. Make sure your nanny gets their own space and has the ability to have downtime. When they work in your home, they work a set amount of hours and go home. But on vacation, they’ll be working most of the time, so be sure to build in some family only time and give your nanny some time away.

3. This is not a “free” vacation for your nanny. It’s not a vacation at all. It’s a business trip. As such, your nanny should be paid their regular rate and any overtime they may accrue.

4. Set expectations ahead of time. Make a clear plan regarding childcare hours, downtime, expenses, and payment before you go. In fact, consider putting it in a formal contract so there are no issues or questions during your vacation.

5. Consider giving your nanny time off after the trip. They will have worked well over their normal set of hours and will need some time to rest and recharge. It’s a good idea to build this into the contract mentioned above.

Vacations are fun, amazing times for families, and they can be a great bonding experience for you, your children, and your nanny. But please make sure to take care of these important details so you can all enjoy the trip!
