Newborn Care Specialists & Postpartum Doulas
You may have heard them called “night nurses” or “baby nurses.” Though these individuals aren’t nurses by trade, Newborn Care Specialists (NCS) do have specialized training and certification and have obtained extensive experience in newborn care and parental support. A Newborn Care Specialist’s primary role is to provide infant child care and educate parents once their little one is home from the hospital – serving as a wealth of knowledge in newborn care and development and acting as a resident “baby whisperer.” But these individuals can easily navigate both infant care and support of the mother as well — fulfilling a postpartum doula role in tandem.  Newborn Care Specialist responsibilities most often include assisting with feeding, maintaining a detailed log, lactation support, gentle sleep training, and child-related light-housekeeping.
CPN Newborn Care Specialists most commonly manage overnight care with 8-hour (minimum) shifts for the first three months of a child’s life; however, a NCS may be hired as a family’s needs arise for 4-hour (minimum) daytime shifts. And NCS engagements can vary from a few weeks to temp. engagements up to ninety (90) days or more.
